Fleas are parasites which find our furry household companions the perfect host and can be an annoyance for both them and us. Here at Kaukapakapa Vets, we stock a variety of products which will help eradicate these potentially harmful parasites from your pets and home.
It is important with flea treatment that you are consistent with the application. We suggest flea treatments should be applied EVERY four weeks, regardless of the season. Fleas don’t disappear as it gets colder, so flea treatment over the winter months is a must.
The products we stock include:
Frontline Plus – this product is a topical (on the skin) treatment which is available for both cats and dogs. Each treatment is based on the weight of the animal. This product will treat fleas, lice and ticks for up to 4 weeks. It should be applied regularly every month.
Broadline – a topical flea, tick, roundworm and tapeworm treatment especially for cats. This can be used alternatively with other flea treatments as worming in adult cats is recommended every three months (Broadline every three months, other flea treatment for the months in between as flea treatment should still be applied every 4 weeks). It comes in two doses; for cats/kittens weighing between 0.8kg-2.4kg and larger cats from 2.5-7.4kg.
Nexgard – this is an oral flea and tick treatment specific for dogs. It comes in a meaty beef flavoured treat which is highly palatable with most dogs. This should also be used monthly to ensure that fleas and ticks are kept under control. Can be used on dogs weighing from 2kg and upwards.
Revolution – this is another topical treatment which is used on puppies and cats. It is effective against adult fleas, larvae and eggs, ear mites and roundworms. It should be used on cats which are of 6 weeks of age or older. This should be applied monthly to provide best results.
Advocate – a topical treatment which can be applied on both cats and dogs. Used for the prevention and control of fleas and flea larvae, ear mites and sarcoptic mange. It can also aid in the treatment of demodectic mange. Also used for the control of roundworms, hookworms and whipworm. However it does not treat against tapeworm, therefore regular worming with a broad spectrum wormer every 3 months is still recommended. Advocate should be applied every month for best results.
Comfortis – this is an oral flea treatment available for both cats and dogs. It is solely for the treatment, prevention and control of flea infestations. It is fast acting and often recommended for use in controlling flea allergy dermatitis. A tablet should be administered orally once a month for the best results.
Prac-tic – a spot on topical treatment for dogs for the prevention and control of flea infestations and ticks. It will eradicate adult fleas before they lay eggs therefore breaking the flea life cycle. Prac-tic should be applied monthly to be effective.
